Dorenell Windfarm Update

Moray is the jewel in the North East of Scotland with a rich, varied landscape, steeped in history and tradition.

From the golden beaches of the Moray Firth in the North to the magnificent wilderness areas in the south, bordering on the Cairngorms.

Sometimes it's all too easy to take it all for granted. But it's only when you stop and look around you realise that living here is special. It doesn't matter if you live in the town or country you're never far from the incredible scenery with its magnificent unspoilt wilderness. It was here long before we were and, if we have any sense, it should remain for future generations to enjoy.

But this is the question... will our greatest natural asset, one that attracts so many visitors from all over the world, still be here in 10 years time?

Tourism is a vital part of Moray's economy and the natural beauty and scenery attracts many 1000's of visitors annually.

But what will happen if wind farms continue to be built, taller and bigger, casting a massive visual blight across some of our most scenic parts of Moray?

Salmon fishing and the Whisky industry provide 1000's of jobs and, but what will happen if their water supplies become polluted as the peat bogs and moorland are destroyed with the rotting vegetation washed down into the burns and rivers?

The threat of creeping industrialisation of the country by the growing spread of wind farms is real.

12% of Scotland's wind turbines (89) are already located in Moray or close to the the border of Moray. ... however there are now proposals for 4 more wind farms IN MORAY, including a proposal to site 71 of the tallest turbines yet seen in Scotland slap in the middle of one of the most pristine areas of unspoiled wilderness still remaining in Moray.... The Glenfiddich and Blackwater hills, bordering on the Cairngorm National Park.

SOS Moray has been set up with 4 aims

  1. To give people facts that the wind farm companies do not advertise
  2. To present a reasoned argument against further wind farm development in Moray and in Scotland as a whole and to promote some alternatives to the blinkered, misguided view that "wind farms will solve all problems"
  3. To encourage visitors and local folk to add their voice of protest before Scotland is overrun by wind farms.
  4. To campaign against further Wind Farm development in Moray.

Think we're exaggerating??

This map shows the locations of proposed, approved and operational wind farms in Scotland as at 2005

There are even more in the pipeline today

In 10 years time how many places of unspoilt wilderness will remain?
